The village and its watermill
The watermill is a distinctive part of old Ollerton’s heritage. Nottinghamshire’s Historic Environment Record describes a brick-built corn mill with an attached mill house, and records the machinery and successive phases of its working life. It offers a useful introduction to how waterpower supported local industry before a visit to the village.

Ancient oaks and forest adventures
For the Major Oak and the Robin Hood story, head to the Sherwood Forest visitor centre at Edwinstowe. The reserve’s official walking information helps you choose between shorter outings and longer trails through ancient woodland. Its visitor centre provides an introduction to the forest, along with a café and shop. This is a good choice when the trees, wildlife and landscape are the main reason for your visit.
Sherwood Pines is a different destination, managed by Forestry England. Its walking and cycling opportunities make it worth considering for a more active day outside. Choose the right site before setting off: the Sherwood Forest visitor centre and Sherwood Pines have separate directions, parking arrangements and activity information. Follow each operator’s current trail guidance and access information.
A wider day out at Clumber Park
Clumber Park gives you another way to spend time outdoors beyond Ollerton. The National Trust estate combines parkland, woodland and a lake, with a walled kitchen garden among its visitor attractions. It suits a day built around walking, a picnic or exploring the estate at a gentler pace. It is a separate trip from the village and the Sherwood Forest visitor centre.
Use the National Trust’s visitor page to choose what you want to see and to check access, admission and facilities. For a first visit to the area, selecting one larger attraction leaves more time to enjoy it than trying to fit the whole Sherwood landscape into an afternoon. Shopping, food and a pause by the village
Ollerton’s appeal includes the practical stops as well as the woodland outings. The district visitor guide brings together local shopping, food and drink listings, so it is a useful place to look for a stop that fits your route through Old or New Ollerton. Check the individual business address before booking: the wider visitor area also includes nearby villages and estates.
Bella Vita on Main Street is one local option for an Italian meal, with menus and table-booking details on its own website. If you are spending the day at Sherwood Forest, the visitor centre at Edwinstowe has its own café and shop. These are useful starting points, not a ranked restaurant list or paid recommendations; menus and availability belong with the businesses themselves.
Library, leisure and community life
Ollerton Library is on Forest Road in New Ollerton. Alongside borrowing books, its visitor information covers computers, printing and practical facilities. Dukeries Leisure Centre is on Main Road in neighbouring Boughton. Active4Today publishes information about swimming, fitness, sports facilities and booking. Getting here and getting around
Stagecoach lists the Sherwood Arrow as a route linking Nottingham with Ollerton, Retford and Worksop. Its current service page is the place to check the timetable and the journey you need. A route name alone does not establish that every bus serves every destination, so check the direction and stopping pattern for both the outward and return trip.
Traveline can help piece together journeys by public transport using your actual starting point and destination. Enter the attraction’s address rather than only “Ollerton” when heading to a forest visitor centre or a neighbouring village. Drivers can use the district council’s parking information alongside the destination’s own directions; forest and estate car parks have their own arrangements.
